I was thinking about Wendy's Blog and my own experience with scammers. I know I have a few ideas about how to spot them, but I could definitely use more ... and maybe it would help all of us if we listed the red flags. Mine are:
1. won't chat on LF and insists on another chat location
2. tells you he loves you, wants to marry you, build his dreams around you etc. after a few chats
3. wants to talk/chat at length every day (no one has that much time, unless their 'job' is scamming)
4. wan more...

4. wants you to delete your profile and get off LF because you've finally found each other (before you've ever met in person)
5. works on an offshore oil rig
6. no answer at the phone number he gave you (or excuses about bad reception because he works on an oil rig)
7. cell phone numbers registered out of South Carolina (not all of them of course, but it seems to be a trend)
8. calls that come through an international router number
9. all the compliments and declarations of falling in love begin to sound emotionally manipulative (because they are)
10. widowed AND orphaned (has no family at all except a child)... has a child who lives with a distant relative in another country (because they work such long hours or whatever)
11. gets angry when you don't respond they way they want
12. request for money ('nuff said)
Frankly, 2, 4-6, 8,10 and 12 aren't just red flags ... they're deal breakers. less...

LOL ... yes!! And I'll bet you got it yesterday, with a subject line that said "Hey Sexy!!"
I think the hidden profile, in this case, may mean he's already been reported as a scammer, and the profile has been deleted, but I'm not sure. more...

Somehow I doubt I am the only recipient - interesting there is no mention of age or location - I presume they tailor that to suit once someone is gullible enough to respond?!

And one of the best things to do if you're not sure if they are legit or not, ask for help.
Never use IM programs or webcams with anyone you aren't sure of either. Pics can be taken by the person viewing your webcam.

Google the username or email address as well, sometimes you can find addt'l information. There are a few good resources on the 'net to help figure out if they are legit or not.

Tells a story about how two of his female friends from the site caught the guy they were dating with the other girl ... I'm thinking it was HIM who got caught.
Refuses to call because you have caller ID on your phone.
Lies about how long he's been a member of dating site or how many he's registered on.
You wouldn't think that somewhat educated women would even need a post like this, but after being on this site a while, it's plainly obvious, THEY DO! I find that if I go with my gut, I am pretty much safe from scammers. This goes for my off-line life, too! I don't EVER reply to emails and / or winks from those that are "too good to be true". I trust my instincts. So far, they haven't steered me wrong. I just hope that they will steer me right into Mr. Right's arms!--True
OMG, Mr Oil rig does get around, dont forget the one that is stuck in Africa with his business in crisis, just needs a little funding. My personal favorite was the one that told me that he loved me in the 2nd email and when I pulled him up on this, argues with me for the next 6 emails how I was sent to him by god. GRRRRRRRRRHHHH
